The Pisgah
National Forest has a lot to offer other than
climbing. There are countless mountain biking
trails, hiking trails, swimming at sliding rock,
and plenty of great fly fishing.
Mountain biking
in PNF is fantastic. Many bikers enjoy the Black
Mountain Trail. You can start behind the Pisgah
stable and follow the logging rode uphill for
a long way. Look for a sharp turn to the right.
Take this until you come upon the Black Mountain
Trail. Turn right and follow this uphill some
more. I am usually sweating way before this
point and have walked the bike a few times.
Eventually, it does go downhill and you will
enjoy a great ride. Be careful of hikers; this
part of the trail is very popular and there
has been more than one collision. For more information
on mountain biking see Backcountry Outdoors
on the corner of 276 and 64 or Sycamore Cycles
on 64 next to the Fish Camp Restaurant. http://www.sycamorecycles.com/icyclebikeraces.html

Sliding Rock
is a popular swimming hole run by the PNF. For
a dollar per person you get the opportunity
to freeze as you slide down a natural cascade
some 60 feet into an icy water bath, while onlookers
take pictures of your expressions. This is the
best way to cool off after climbing. Take 276
west past Looking Glass Falls. Sliding Rock
is about 15 minutes past the falls on the left.
There is a PNF sign at the entrance.
Hiking abounds
in the PNF. One of the best places to start
is the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education
/ Fish Hatchery. This is located about 6 miles
from the entrance to the PNF. Follow 276 W until
you cross Looking Glass Creek. There is a sign
at a left turn indicating the Center / Fish
Hatchery. Turn left and follow this road until
you see the center on your left. As you turn
into the parking lot you will see John’s
Rock. There is an excellent hike around this
rock that will put you on the summit. It is
about 4 miles long. Trail information can be
obtained in the center. http://www.ncwildlife.org/pg08_EducationWorkshops/pg8c.htm
