AMI
Expert Rock Course
This course takes off from the AMI Advanced
Rock Course and teaches one how to safely
set up belays for multipitch climbs, manage belay
stances, make efficient transitions and get back
safely. Imagine the fun and excitement of leading
longer routes with your partner. Can you do this
safely? How are the belays set up differently
for multipitch and why? What hazards do you need
to recognize? If you have been climbing single
pitch traditional routes for a while or have just
started climbing multipitch routes, this course
will help you get started for those new to multipitch.
It will significantly speed up your systems for
those who have been climbing multipitch.
This one-day
course builds on the topics of the AMI Advanced
Rock Course, but follows a similar instructional
progression of: fundamental skills, belay management,
protection systems, ascending, descending, and
rescue skills. If you have taken the AMI Advance
Rock Course you will see how the prior skills
become building blocks for the multipitch setting.
This course expands on prior knowledge, building
new skills for greater challenges.
The course emphasizes
subtle, but critical differences between single
pitch climbing and multipitch rock climbing: route
finding, communication, and the differences in
anchor rigging, rescue skills and efficient transitions.
One of the challenges facing climbers tackling
longer routes is transitioning between pitches
and rappels in a safe and efficient manner. You
will learn not only the technical skills needed
to do this, but the judgment necessary to make
good decisions.
The benefits
of this course include:
• Effective anchors for multipitch climbing
• Understanding forces, fall factors, and
multipitch situations for better decision making
• Efficient transitions for faster leading,
belaying or rappelling
• Simpler stance organization
• Descending options and hazard avoidance
• Proper use of the Grigri, Reverso and
the ATC Guide
• Rescue situations
Participants
must have traditional leading experience and an
understanding of belaying, placing protection
and rope skills. The traditional leading course
is highly recommended as a pre-requisite.
